About

As educators, we live in very exciting times. At no other time in history have we had so many different pedagogical approaches and technologies for creating highly engaging and impactful learning experiences for our learners.

Pedagogies

We all want to improve our teaching and the quality of the materials we put in front of our students. However, with all of these choices comes the challenge of time – time to keep up, time to get help, time to learn how and time to create. Unfortunately, in many institutions Learning Design and Learning Technologist specialists are in limited supply with many academics having to go it alone.

This is where this site comes in. The EdTech in Higher Education site been specifically created for busy academics working in BYOD (Bring your own device) or BYOT (Bring your own technology) environments who want to engage their students in lectures, tutorials and laboratories by incorporating technology and leveraging the power of mobile devices. It is focused on providing wherever possible, device agnostic software and app reviews, how-to guides, and templates for those who want to create their own technology-based resources to enhance student learning.

My philosophy on the use of technology is based on three principles:

  1. Pedagogy before technology – design a quality learning experience first and then select the technology that supports it.
  2. KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) – why use a complex, complicated and expensive technology when a free or low cost basic technology used differently will do the same job?
  3. More than substitution – Technology in learning needs to be more than simply a substitution for a paper-based alternative.

I hope you find the materials I provide on this site to be useful in your endeavours to leverage the power of technology to enhance your classes and engage learners.
